QWF non-fiction mentorship program

Here’s a copy/paste from the latest QWF newsletter…

StoryNet Mentorship Program for Non-Fiction Writers
Deadline EXTENDED to April 16, 2012
qwf.org/qwf-qahn.html

The QWF is accepting applications from English-language writers across Quebec who would like to participate in a new mentorship program designed to encourage new and emerging voices in Canadian literary non-fiction. You must be a Quebec resident to participate in this program.

Successful candidates will be invited to develop their craft by writing and polishing two short- to medium-length (1,200-2,400 word) pieces under the guidance of an accomplished professional author.

Program Mentors:
Adam Leith Gollner
Elaine Kalman Naves
Joel Yanofsky

Participants who complete the program will have the opportunity to see their works published in Quebec Heritage News magazine between September 2012 and March 31, 2013.

Registration for the StoryNet mentorship program is free but only six spaces are available. These will be reserved for applicants showing a fresh and original style matched with insight into, and understanding of, an engaging subject or subjects.

How to Apply
Submissions may be made online at http://qwfqahn.submishmash.com/submit or submitted in hard copy (4 copies of everything) to:

StoryNet Mentorship Program
Quebec Writers’ Federation
1200 Atwater Avenue, Room 3
Westmount, QC, H3Z 1X4

If you are mailing in your submission, be sure to include your name, email address and telephone number (the online form will request this information as well).

All applications must contain the following:

  • A brief cover letter introducing yourself and explaining why you’d like to work with a mentor. For online submissions, this text will need to be cut and pasted into the “cover letter” field on the submission website;
  • A separate document, double-spaced, in two sections: 1) five pages of an unpublished writing sample – non-fiction or fiction – to demonstrate your writing style to the jury; 2) one page outlining one or more specific story ideas you would like to work on with your mentor for publication in Quebec Heritage News. Your idea(s) should touch on some aspect of the history and heritage of Quebec, but can take many forms. For example:
    • Stories of local or neighbourhood history, conveyed in a fresh manner; a personal angle is preferable to a detached, academic approach.
    • Family history, brought to life with colourful writing and a critical perspective.
    • Thoughtful and observant accounts of travel within the province or other encounters that have led to reflection.
    • Reviews of museums or exhibitions, particularly if they involve a flair for description and personal insight.

In all cases, stories should appeal to a broad readership without sacrificing erudition. Humour is always welcome.

If you are submitting online, this second document must be uploaded as a text document (no pdfs) at the submission web site.
All submissions MUST BE IN THE QWF OFFICE, EITHER ELECTRONICALLY OR PHYSICALLY,
BY 5:00 PM ON APRIL 16, 2012.

Successful applicants will be notified of the jury’s decision by the end of April 2012 and the mentorship will begin in May. It may continue for up to six months. Selected writers will receive approximately 15 hours of feedback from their mentor—about 7 ½ hours on each of two articles.

Quebec Heritage News magazine is published by the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network (QAHN), which gratefully acknowledges the support of the Development of Official-Languages Support Programs Branch, Department of Canadian Heritage, which made this project possible.

Summit Studios – Call for Entries

Summit Studios, a small Canadian publishing company that specializes in humour anthologies, is calling  for entries to  publish in 2012 and 2013. Word on the street – or cyberspace – is that Quebec writers have been under-represented in their anthologies, so they’re eager to read the work of Quebec writers which, we know, totally rocks. There’s still time, as the deadline for submissions is February 29, 2012.

According to the publisher:  “This time around we’re giving away $3,000 in cash prizes to nine winners in four distinct categories, including a $1,000 Grand Prize. The previous Grand Prize winner was Lois Gordon of the Writers’ Circle of Durham Region for her story “Antler Girls,” which appeared with some two dozen other stories in the 2010 anthology Never Trust a Smiling Bear.  For writers who do not win a prize, there is still a good chance we will publish their story if it fits our parameters. Writers maintain copyright to their work, and we pay a minimum $100 honorarium for every story that we publish.”

Interested writers should  visit  www.summitstudios.biz and download Story Contest Guidelines and to familiarize themselves with the types of stories Summit likes to publish. You’ll find several previously published stories under some of the author profiles in the Writers’ Spotlight section.

Call for entries: Short fiction for ZenFri Inc.

ZenFri Inc., a small Canadian creative arts company, is publishing an anthology of works titled “Warpaint” in Early 2012 and is now accepting submissions of your boldest, most unusual, and provocative short fiction.

It doesn’t matter how many times your work has been published, or if you’re simultaneously submitting, all we want is your boldest, most unusual and provocative work. Please read the guidelines below, and submit your files to submit@zenfri.com. Once a file has been submitted, you agree to the ‘Terms of Submission’ outlined at http://zenfri.com/terms-of-submission/.

Deadline: Dec 31st

Short Fiction – any piece up to 7,500 words, but you must choose a single work to submit. This work should be submitted as a .doc or .odt file.

Within a single file please include:

  • A single written piece, double spaced at 12 font.
  • A brief biography (up to two sentences).
  • A short summary of the plot, characters, and themes in your piece.
  • A publication history.
  • Your name, mailing address and e-mail on the first page.

It’s our belief that each story has its own appropriate length; if you give us two mind blowing paragraphs, the piece will be weighted similarly to a longer piece with equal ‘mind blowing’ qualities.

Compensation

At ZenFri we believe in equality among publishers and contributors, therefore we’re committed to compensating the authors and artists whose work we publish. To us your work is as important as our own, which is why every contributor published by ZenFri will be paid an equal share of the revenue as ZenFri itself receives.
